Mammaglobin, a member of the uteroglobin family, is a 10kDa glycoprotein. Mammaglobin mRNA expression is breast tissue specific. It is overexpressed in human breast cancer. The use of Mammaglobin RT-PCR has been demonstrated to detect disseminated breast cancer. In a study to evaluate the frequency and specificity of mammaglobin, 80% of all primary and metastatic breast tumors tested were immunopositive irrespective of tumor grade, while mammaglobin mRNA was detected in 60% of the peripheral stem cell collections from breast cancer patients.
