This gene product belongs to the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane glycoproteins composed of a distinct alpha chain and a common beta chain. They are found on a wide variety of cell types including, T cells, fibroblasts and platelets. Integrins are involved in cell adhesion and also participate in cell-surface mediated signalling. Test Specificity The molecular weight of the recognized antigen is 138/115KDa under non-reducing conditions and 145/126KDa under reduced conditions. Recognizes the VLA2 antigen (alpha 2 beta 1 complex) also called Ia/IIa glycoprotein complex or collagen receptor. This antibody reacts with the molecules carrying the Br(a) as well as the Br(b) alloantigen. It reacts with platelets, megakaryocytes and activated T cells. Does not react with B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes and red blood cells. This antibody inhibits the adhesion of platelets to collagen.
