PD-1 (Programmed Cell Death Protein 1, PCDP-1, CD279) is a cell surface receptor approximately 273-290 amino acids in length that inhibits cell-mediated immune responses initiated by T lymphocytes. PD-1 can bind two different but related ligands, PDL-1 and PDL-2. Upon binding to either of these ligands, signals generated by PD-1 inhibit the activation of the immune response in the absence of "danger signals" such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) associated with bacteria or pathogens. Evidence for this is seen in PD1-null mice who exhibit hyper-activated immune systems and autoimmune diseases. Further, expression of this gene in mice is induced in the thymus when anti-CD3 antibodies are injected and large numbers of thymocytes undergo apoptosis. Mice deficient for this gene bred on a BALB/c background developed dilated cardiomyopathy and died from congestive heart failure.Specifications
