Thermo Scientific™ Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose
Description
Cultivate fungi and demonstrate the chromogenesis of dermatophytes using Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose.
Cultivate fungi and demonstrate the chromogenesis of dermatophytes using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose. In 1970, Hazen and Reed utilized Cornmeal Agar for culturing pathogenic fungi1. Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose is recommended to demonstrate chromogenesis and aid in identification of some species of Trichophyton 2,3. Identification of Trichophyton to the species level is necessary to allow correct treatment of diseases, such as tinea capitis, where drug dosage levels of treatment times may require species-specific adjustment4.
Cultivate fungi and demonstrate the chromogenesis of dermatophytes using Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose.
- Ready to Use: Convenience of prepared media.
- Ease of Differentiation: Dextrose differentiates Trichophyton rubrum, which produces a red pigment on Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose.
This medium is recommended for use in qualitative procedures. Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose consists of cornmeal extract and agar. Cornmeal extract provides essential nutrients needed to support the growth of fungi. Trichophyton rubrum produces a red pigment on Cornmeal Agar w/1% Dextrose. This characteristic can be used to differentiate it from Trichophyton mentagrophytes which produces no pigment.
