Thermo Scientific™ Jordans Tartrate Agar (5mL Butt)
Description
Differentiate Enterobacteriaceae based on tartrate utilization using Jordans Tartrate Agar.
Differentiate Enterobacteriaceae based on tartrate utilization using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Jordans Tartrate Agar. In 1928, Jordan and Harmon developed a medium to detect sodium tartrate fermentation by certain strains of Salmonella1. In 1957, Ellis et al. demonstrated that to differentiate Salmonella and Arizona, organic acids such as D-tartrate were useful2.
This agar medium differentiates Enterobacteriaceae based on tartrate utilization. This medium contains peptones that supply nitrogenous compounds and amino acids necessary for the growth of enteric gram-negative bacilli.
- Ready to use – Convenience of prepared media.
- Differential media - Sodium tartrate is a differential agent which is fermented by some enteric gram-negative bacilli
- Easy to interpret -
- Positive test - Yellow color development in the lower portion of the tube; the surface zone remains red
- Negative test - No color change; agar remains alkaline with a red color throughout the tube
Sodium chloride is a source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. The acid produced results in a pH change causing the phenol indicator to change from red to yellow in the lower portion of the tube.
