Shikimic Acid, MP Biomedicals™
Description
Shikimic acid is a precursor for the aromatic amino acids (phenylalanine, tyrosine and trypyophan), indole and indole derivatives. It is also a precursor of many alkaloids and other aromatic metabolites, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, tannins, and lignin.
This tri-hydroxy cyclohexene carboxylic acid is important in the biosynthesis of so many compounds that the shikimate pathway (the seven-step metabolic route used by bacteria, fungi, algae, parasites and plants for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids) is named after it.
