This gene is known for its role in regulating gene expression, particularly in the repression of genes like ARF, p53, and p21, and it functions as both a repressor and activator. ZBTB2 interacts with a variety of proteins involved in complex biological processes such as RNA processing, transcription regulation, and DNA packaging. Its zinc-finger domains predominantly belong to C2H2 and PHD types. ZBTB2 is involved in nucleosome remodeling through its interaction with chromatin modifiers and histone chaperones during developmental cell state transitions. The gene has been implicated in human cancers, where it functions as an oncogene, particularly in gastric cancers, and plays a role in the development of chronic myeloid leukemia.
