Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Head, 500mL, Solvent, Modified, 24/40 Inner Joint On Take-Off. Designed to maintain distilled solvents in an inert atmosphere. Top of main vapor tube is open and an additional vapor tube has been added to decrease risk of pressure buildup. Upper sampling port has a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septa. Lower drain is centered to allow total drainage of storage head. Double oblique 2mm bore PTFE stopcock on the 250 through 1000mL sizes allows for removal of distilled solvent or return to flask. The 250mL size has a 4mm double oblique stopcock. Both the uptake tube and top outer joints are 24/40, while the take-off tube is supplied with a 24/40 inner joint.**Design suggested by Dr. A.K. Barrett style distilling receiver used to determine the water content in petroleum or bituminous material. Receiver is made according to ASTM specifications, with the addition of the top outer standard taper joint and lower stopcock. The 2mL has sub-divisions of 0.02mL; the 5ml has subdivisions of 0.20mL; 10ml has subdivisions of 0.1mL; the 20mL has subdivisions of 0.2 from 0 to 3mL and 0.5 from 3 to 20mL. Available with glass or PTFE stopcocks.

The jacket eliminates the possibility of condensation or recrystallization of distillate in the sidearm. Designed for use with small quantities where hold up between the flask and receiver must be kept to a minimum. The thermometer bulb and stem serve as column packing. Upper hose connections are for cooling lines while the lower connection is for vacuum. Available with Vigreux indentations to improve efficiency. NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accepts a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

Vacuum adapter has an inner joint and a sealed in drip tip. Condenser length is 100mm on the 14/20 size and 200mm on the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes.
