Malt Extract is a useful ingredient of culture media designed for the propagation of yeasts and molds. This ingredient is suitable for yeasts and molds because it contains a high concentration of carbohydrates, particularly maltose. The approximate percentage of reducing sugars in Malt Extract is 60 – 63%.The high carbohydrate content makes malt extract very sensitive to overheating which results in darkening of the medium it is used in. Maximum Recovery Diluent (Tryptone Salt Broth) is used as an isotonic diluent for maximum recovery of microorganisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. An osmotically controlled solution which is an alternative to, and a replacement for, 1/4 strength Ringer’s Tablets (NCM0191K). The presence of a low level of peptone lessens the physiological shock normally experienced by bacterial cells when they are introduced to a diluent such as Ringer’s Solution. The level of peptone is such that multiplication of the organisms is not possible in the time in which the sample will be present in the diluent (1-2 hours). NEOGEN Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar Levine, 10 kg
Eosin Methylene Blue Agar Levine is used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.This medium was introduced in 1916 by Holt-Harris and Teague to differentiate Escherichia spp. and Aerobacter spp. It was modified by Levine in 1918 who removed sucrose from the formula and increased the lactose content. The distinctive metallic sheen produced by E. coli on this medium is due to acid production resulting in an amide bonding between the eosin and methylene blue, other coliforms do not produce enough acid to cause this reaction.
