The original formulation of DMEM contained 1000mg/L of glucose, but since has been raised in some modifications to 4500mg/L, giving the terms of Low Glucose or High Glucose. Several other modifications over the years, in addition to the alternative glucose levels, have broadened the spectrum of cell types supported by DMEM.
