Lauryl Tryptose (LST) Broth is used for the detection of coliform bacteria in water and wastewater. Lauryl Tryptose Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Lauryl Tryptose Broth is a selective medium for the detection of coliforms in water, dairy products and other foods. The American Public Health Authority (APHA) recommend Lauryl Tryptose Broth for the Most Probable Number Presumptive Test of coliforms in waters, effluent or sewage and as a confirmation test of lactose fermentation with gas production from milk samples and for the detection of coliforms in foods.Lauryl Tryptose Broth is prepared according to the formulation of Mallmann and Darby. Mallmann and Darby showed that tryptose at a concentration of 2% increased the early logarithmic growth phase when compared to meat peptone. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/lauryl-tryptose-broth

MacConkey Broth is used for the detection of coliform bacteria in milk and water. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A medium recommended by the Harmonized USP/EP/JP for the selective enrichment of Escherichia coli from non-sterile samples. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP performance specification. Gelatin peptone provides a source of nitrogen, while lactose is a fermentable carbohydrate. Ox bile acts a selective agent inhibiting most Gram-positive organisms and bromocresol purple acts as a pH indicator. A color change from purple to yellow indicates growth of a bile tolerant, lactose fermenting organism such as Escherichia coli. According to the Harmonized USP/EP/JP, MacConkey Broth is used as a selective enrichment broth, with subculture performed onto MacConkey Agar. Learn More
BCYE Agar is used (with appropriate supplementation) for the isolation of Legionella spp. from water and environmental samples. BCYE Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1977, McDade et al. identified Legionella pneumophila as the causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease, a multisystem disease manifested primarily by pneumonia. In 1978 a new medium, F-G Agar, resulted in improved growth of L. pneumophila, a very fastidious organism. Freely et al. modified F-C Agar by substituting yeast extract as a vitamin source and replacing starch with activated charcoal, producing Charcoal Yeast Extract (CYE) Agar. In 1980, Pasculle et al. reported that CYE Agar could be improved by the addition of ACES (N-2-acetamido-2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) buffer. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bcye-agar-legionella-isolation-medium

PALCAM Broth is used with supplements for the selective enrichment of Listeria spp. from foods and environmental samples in a laboratory setting. PALCAM Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Listeria monocytogenes, described in 1926 by Murray, Webb, and Swann, is a widespread problem in food industries. Evidence from outbreaks of listeriosis indicate the principle route of transmission is via the consumption of foodstuffs contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Implicated vehicles of transmission include turkey frankfurters, coleslaw, pasteurized milk, Mexican style cheese, and pate. PALCAM Broth is based on the formulation of Van Netten et al. while he was investigating the isolation of Listeria spp. from food samples. PALCAM Broth has been used for testing Listeria from raw milk. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/palcam-broth

Universal Pre-enrichment Broth is used for the recovery of Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp. in a laboratory setting. Universal Pre-enrichment Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Traditional methods for recovering Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp. from food products require separate pre-enrichment media for each microorganism. Some broth media recommended for preenrichment contain antibiotic inhibitors or have insufficient buffering capacity which hinder recovery of sublethally injured cells. Bailey and Cox formulated Universal Preenrichment Broth to permit simultaneous resuscitation of sublethally injured Salmonella and Listeria. The broth medium provides sufficient buffering capacity to prevent rapid decreases in pH and allows for repair of injured cells that might be sensitive to low pH values or inhibitory substances. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/universal-preenrichment-broth

Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements.Chapman formulated Mannitol Salt Agar to isolate staphylococci by inhibiting growth of most other bacteria with a high salt concentration. Chapman added 7.5% Sodium Chloride to Phenol Red Mannitol Agar and noted pathogenic strains of staphylococci (coagulase-positive staphylococci) grew luxuriantly and produced yellow colonies with yellow zones. Non-pathogenic staphylococci produced small red colonies with no color change to the surrounding medium.
