NEOGEN Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar Levine, 500 g
Eosin Methylene Blue Agar Levine is used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.This medium was introduced in 1916 by Holt-Harris and Teague to differentiate Escherichia spp. and Aerobacter spp. It was modified by Levine in 1918 who removed sucrose from the formula and increased the lactose content. The distinctive metallic sheen produced by E. coli on this medium is due to acid production resulting in an amide bonding between the eosin and methylene blue, other coliforms do not produce enough acid to cause this reaction. MYP Agar Base is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Formulated to ISO 7932:2004 MYP was introduced by Mossel and his co-workers in 1967 for the enumeration of Bacillus cereus in foods and was shown to be the most effective for this purpose by Inal in 1972. B. cereus is differentiated from other members of the Bacillus group by two reactions: mannitol fermentation and lecithinase production. Mannitol fermentation on this medium produces a yellow color. B. cereus is mannitol negative and produces red colonies. Lactobacilli MRS Agar is used for the cultivation of lactobacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.MRS Agar is a medium for the cultivation and enumeration of Lactobacillus spp. Originally developed in 1960 by de Man, Rogosa & Sharpe, the medium is suitable for most lactic acid bacteria and is intended as a substitute for Tomato Juice Agar. When acidified to pH 5.4 MRS Agar can be used to enumerate Lactobacillus bulgaricus in yogurts.Nutrition is provided by a mixture of carefully selected peptones, glucose, beef & yeast extracts while Tween 80, magnesium and manganese sulfates act as growth stimulants. Selectivity against streptococci & molds is provided by ammonium citrate and sodium acetate. m-Enterococcus Agar is used for the selective isolation and enumeration of enterococci by membrane filtration in a laboratory setting. m-Enterococcus Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.m-Enterococcus Agar was first described by Slanetz et al. for the enumeration of enterococci by the membrane filtration technique. In 1957, Slanetz and Bartley modified this medium by adding triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC). Increased recovery and larger colonies were obtained by incubating the inoculated membranes on the agar surface instead of on pads saturated with liquid medium. Geldreich et al. formulated a medium to enumerate fecal coliforms (FC) using the membrane filter (m) technique without prior enrichment. Many standard method membrane filtration procedures recommend m-FC media for testing water.
