Murid betaherpesvirus 1 strain Smith is propagated in SC-1 cells (ATCC CRL-1404). This viral strain was derived from ATCC VR-194 and treated to remove Mycoplasma hominis at ATCC. The virus was originally isolated from the salivary gland tissues of 3 naturally infected mice and was deposited by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
