Scissors
Hand-held instruments designed to cut thin materials, such as paper and cloth, consisting of two blades laid one on top of the other; products may be intended for use in specific applications such as cutting tissue or bone, dissections, etc.
Scissors are used in the laboratory to cut various materials. Some are for general use and others are designed specifically for tissue dissection or surgery.
Scissors are hand-operated tools that consist of a pair of metal blades with handles. The blades pivot to bring the sharpened edges in contact with each other, an action that cuts the material placed between the blades.
Scissors are selected based on specific features:
- Size or length: Blade length is key, as is the overall length of the scissors
- Shank-to-blade ratio: The length of the handles compared to the length of the cutting blade; the ratio helps determine the force needed to product a cut
- Type of handles: Straight, offset
- Material: Stainless steel is typically used for surgical scissors; some surgical scissors also have tungsten carbide cutting surfaces for hardness and durability
- Tips: Blade ends may be pointed, semi-blunt, or blunt (rounded)
- Blade shape: Straight, curved, or angled (bent); curved or angled blades may provide better access to areas with limited space

World Precision Instrument Student Spring Scissors, 9.5cm, Straight, Blunt/Blunt
Our Student Spring Scissors are surgical instruments for making small, precision cuts. They are 9.5cm long, and fit comfortably into your hand. These have blunt tips or sharp/ball tips, which adds a little protection against surrounding tissue damage. For example, if you need to avoid nipping blood vessels or nerves in tight spaces, a blunt pair of surgical scissors may be your answer. The pair with one pointed tip and one ball tip (often called Metzenbaum spring scissors) gives you sharp, precise cuts and adds the safety of the ball tip to protect surrounding tissues. These scissors are often preferred by inexperienced surgeons and students. The spring mechanism that allows for smooth, precise cutting action, which reduces the risk of tissue damage or trauma. The spring scissors also help to mitigate hand fatigue, because they spring back naturally after you make your cut. Choose either straight or curved for the 6mm blade.

Lister Bandage Scissors are commonly used for sizing dressings and removing circumferential bandages. They may also be used to cut tougher material such as plaster, fabric and occasionally umbilical cord. The jaws of the Lister Bandage Scissors are angled with the lower blade being slightly longer. The tip of the lower blade features a flattened blunt nodule that is intended to slide between bandages and skin without cutting the skin. This feature allows Lister Bandage Scissors to occasionally be used during cesarean section to open the uterus without causing inadvertent injury to the baby. Ring handles can be equal in size or with one ring larger. This product is angled with smooth, blunt/blunt tips and a length of 7-1/4 inches.
