Commonly Asked Questions

What Is in a
Specimen Collection Kit?
A specimen collection kit contains the elements needed for secure collection, storage, and transport of blood, stool, urine, and other microbiological or biomedical specimens. Depending on the application, these kits should include a swab or applicator sealed in a sterile vial, tube, or pouch. Vials containing transport or other media may also be components of specimen collection kits. Vials should have a screw cap or other secure closure. Because the specimens are subject to degradation, directions for their proper use should be provided and closely followed.
How Do You Use a
Specimen Collection Kit?
Follow the proper procedures for collecting microbiological or biomedical specimens. Begin the process by donning the appropriate masks, gloves, goggles, gowns, and other safety gear to minimize your exposure to infectious diseases and prevent sample contamination.
- Open the container
- Swab the appropriate area of the patient
- Insert the swab into the transport media, breaking the swab at the scored line as needed
- Secure the closure
- Label the vial with the patient information
- Transport the specimen to the lab for processing as soon as possible
