About Women-Owned Businesses

According to data from the Small Business Administration (SBA) Annual Business Survey, women employer businesses numbered 1.1 million in 2019. However, women-owned businesses represented only about 20 percent of all employer firms, which were also underrepresented in all demographic groups when compared to male counterparts.

Despite these statistics, women-led businesses employed 10.1 million workers and accumulated $1.8 trillion in receipts in 2019. The number of firms owned by women grew six percent between 2014 and 2016, twice the rate of growth of firms owned by men. This growth was the result of an increase in minority women employer businesses, which grew 14 percent.

Current Goals

The U.S. government currently has a five percent contracting goal for women-owned small businesses.
