Colored pencils (two colors), microscope, 10 onion bulbs, jars with lids, two jars (one per treatment) for six students, sand, ethanol, glacial acetic acid (17.4M), hydrochloric acid, razor blades, forceps, scissors, scientific cleaning (Kimwipes™) wipes, coplin jars and disposable gloves
- Onion root tips are stained to identify the various stages and duration of mitosis
- Meiosis and Crossing Over in Sordaria is also demonstrated in this experiment
- Students will also have an opportunity to analyze mechanisms involved with the loss of cell cycle control in cancer
