Description
Isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium spp. using Middlebrook 7H11 Agar.
Isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium spp. using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Middlebrook 7H11 Agar (Dehydrated). In 1958, Middlebrook and Cohn improved the first formulation of oleic acid and albumin agar to obtain 7H10 Agar, which allows faster and more luxuriant growth of Mycobacterium species1. In 1968, Cohn et al. further modified the medium by adding casein hydrolysate, glycerol and OADC enrichment which stimulated the growth of other mycobacteria which could not grow on 7H10 agar2.
Isolate and cultivate Mycobacterium spp. using Middlebrook 7H11 Agar.
This medium is used for qualitative procedures. This medium contains inorganic salts which are essential for the growth of mycobacteria.
- Selective: Malachite-green dye present in the media inhibits bacteria other than Mycobacterium spp.
- Allows luxuriant growth of Mycobacterium
Casein hydrolysate serves as a growth stimulant for drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis3. Biotin helps to stimulate the growth of damaged mycobacteria. Glycerol acts as a source of carbon and anergy while ODAC Enrichment provides nutrients required for the growth of mycobacteria.
