1-Dodecylimidazole (N-Dodecylimidazole) is a lysosomotropic detergent and cytotoxic agent that induces cell death by acid-dependent accumulation in lysosomes, followed by disruption of the lysosomal membrane and release of cysteine proteases into the cytoplasm. It also displays hypocholesterolaemic and broad-spectrum antifungal activities. In vitro studies show its cytotoxicity is pH-dependent, with significantly greater cell killing at pHe 6.0 than at pHe 7.0. In vivo, its hypocholesterolaemic effect is partly due to the inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis.
