The thiol groups form stable thioether bond with thiol-reactive groups of the polymers (Mal-PVA Mal-Dextran SG-PVA and SG-Dextran) and results in a stable hydrogel.The conjugated peptide has matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-cleavage sites (Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Trp-Ala) which allows matrix metalloproteases (MMP1 MMP3 MMP7 and MMP9) to locally degrade the polymer network. It allows cells to spread and migrate within the gel if they express the indicated MMPs.
