Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Coolant, introduced into the upper hose connection, fills a large cold finger that is wrapped with coils. After the coolant travels through the coils, it enters the water jacket to maximize cooling surface along the vapor path. Angled take off joint is a standard taper 24/40, and the angled take off joint for the 45/50 size is a standard taper 29/42. Hose connections for the 24/40 size condenser are 10mm at the largest serration. Hose connections for the 45/50 size are 15mm at the largest serration.

Coolant connections are made using removable hose connections with GL-14 threads. Supplied complete with two polypropylene hose connections and caps.

Condenser, 29/42 Joint, Reflux, 230 x 65mm. Compact high efficiency reflux condenser employs a double wall thimble shape bulb sealed into the outer jacket. Serrated hose connections for water connection extend through the outer bulb and have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration. While the overall height of this condenser is only 210-215mm, it has the efficiency of a standard 400mm Liebig or West condenser.

Connections are made of polypropylene and provide a safe and easy way of connecting and disconnecting flexible tubing to the condenser. Supplied complete with two GL open top screw caps and two straight polypropylene hose connections. Condensing area is the same as CG-1217.

Designed for use with small quantities where hold up between the flask and receiver must be kept to a minimum. The thermometer bulb and stem serve as column packing. Upper hose connections are for cooling lines while the lower connection is for vacuum. Available with Vigreux indentations to improve efficiency. NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accepts a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

The 14/20 size uses 2mm bore glass or PTFE stopcocks.

Barrett style distilling receiver used to determine the water content in petroleum or bituminous material. Receiver is made according to ASTM specifications, with the addition of the top outer standard taper joint and lower stopcock. The 2mL has sub-divisions of 0.02mL; the 5ml has subdivisions of 0.20mL; 10ml has subdivisions of 0.1mL; the 20mL has subdivisions of 0.2 from 0 to 3mL and 0.5 from 3 to 20mL. Available with glass or PTFE stopcocks.
