This organism has the ability to cause human illness and death, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Epidemiological evidence from outbreaks of listeriosis indicates the principle route of transmission is via the consumption of foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Implicated vehicles of transmission include meat, eggs, chicken, vegetables, and dairy products. Listeria spp. are ubiquitous in nature, present in a wide range of unprocessed foods and in soil, sewage, and river water. Wilkins-Chalgren Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Wilkins-Chalgren Broth is derived from Wilkins-Chalgren Agar. Wilkins-Chalgren Broth provides good growth of anaerobes. This medium was selected because it does not require the addition of blood to support satisfactory growth of most anaerobes. Wilkins-Chalgren Broth is the same formula as Wilkins-Chalgren Agar with agar omitted. Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) is a modification of Basal Medium Eagle (BME), containing four-fold concentrations of the amino acids and vitamins found in BME, as well as additional supplementary components. The original formulation of DMEM contained 1000mg/L of glucose, but since has been raised in some modifications to 4500mg/L, giving the terms of Low Glucose or High Glucose. Several other modifications over the years, in addition to the alternative glucose levels, have broadened the spectrum of cell types supported by DMEM. DMEM (powder), low glucose with L-glutamine, item #785042, contains a pyridoxine hydrochloride supplement and 110 mg/L sodium pyruvate. Does not include sodium bicarbonate.
