This media is used for the cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and molds. Potato Dextrose Agar is also used for the maintenance of stock cultures of certain dermatophytes and for the differentiation of varieties of dermatophytes via pigment production. It is also used for testing bacterial contaminants in cosmetics. The addition of blood can be used for the visualization of hemolytic reactions produced by various bacterial species. The addition of Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80) and/or Lecithin, is used for environmental monitoring as they inactivate disinfectant residue. Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) contains a small amount of agar and several reducing agents which detects the presence of anaerobic bacteria in sterility testing. This medium is recommended by the FDA and in the USP for use in sterility confirmation. Strict aerobes tend to grow at the surface whereas obligate anaerobes grow below the upper oxidized layer portion of the broth.
