This gene encodes a member of the TNF cytokine family, acting as a ligand for osteoprotegerin and playing a key role in osteoclast differentiation and activation. It also functions as a dendritic cell survival factor and regulates T cell-dependent immune responses. T cell activation induces expression of this gene, promoting osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. The protein activates the antiapoptotic kinase AKT/PKB via a signaling complex with SRC kinase and TRAF6, suggesting a role in apoptosis regulation. Disruption of the related gene in mice causes severe osteopetrosis, lack of osteoclasts, and defects in T and B lymphocyte differentiation, as well as failure to form lobulo-alveolar mammary structures during pregnancy. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.

This encoded protein is found in the asymmetrical unit membrane (AUM) where it can complex with other transmembrane 4 superfamily proteins. It may play a role in normal bladder epithelial physiology, possibly in regulating membrane permeability of superficial umbrella cells or in stabilizing the apical membrane through AUM/cytoskeletal interactions. The protein may also play a role in tumor suppression. Primary antibodies are available purified, or with a selection of fluorescent CF Dyes and other labels.
