Distillation Labware

Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.
Chemglass Life Sciences 0-8mm Chem-Vac Chem-Cap Valve
0-8mm Chem-Vac Chem-Cap Valve. CHEM-VAC CHEM-CAP valve has a single sidearm sealed at a 90 angle to the barrel. This inexpensive configuration allows for the lower portion of the barrel to be sealed directly to the apparatus being constructed, making for more compact, stronger assemblies. Trap to fit AF-0350-01 90L/min Pump, Airfree, Schlenk. Designed to fit between the vacuum pump and the upper cart shelf on the AF-0300-01 cart to prevent oil from being drawn into the vacuum line. Offset inlet and outlet permits installation as illustrated. All sizes of the trap are fitted with a 4mm Airfree valve to allow the equalization of pressure when the pump is shut down while still having the line portion remain evacuated. Arms on all sizes have 1" OD glass tubing. Requires two AF-0300-11 hose clamps for installation.

O-ring joint provides for a vacuum-tight grease-free seal and permits the trap body to be easily disconnected from the stopper for cleaning. Complete trap is supplied with a stopper, trap body and CG-150-09 clamp.

The 10/18 top outer joint is for a 1¿ immersion thermometer while the 10/30 joints are for a 2¿ immersion thermometer. The 24/40 joint size uses 4mm glass or PTFE stopcocks, and are positioned to permit changing of receiver without interruption of the distillation process. The 14/20 size uses 2mm bore glass or PTFE stopcocks.
