Umbelliferone (7-Hydroxycoumarin) is a natural orally active product of the coumarin family. It is a fluorescing compound that can be used as a sunscreen agent. It induces cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and DNA fragmentation in HepG2 cells. It exhibits significant anticancer effects, attenuates the alteration characteristics of allergic airway inflammation, displays neuroprotective effects, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in chronic alcohol-fed rats.
