Modified Tryptone-Soy Broth has emerged as the medium of choice for the enrichment of E. coli O157:H7 in red meats and is incorporated into ISO/TS 13136:2012. This medium is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Concern regarding E. coli O157:H7 has grown due to the severity of the disease syndromes caused, and the increase in foodborne infection, so too has the need to optimize methods for its efficient isolation. NEOGEN Brilliant Green Agar, 5 kg
Brilliant Green Agar is used for the selective isolation of Salmonella spp. in a laboratory setting. Brilliant Green Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Kristensen, Lester, and Jurgens first described the use of Brilliant Green Agar as a primary plating medium for the isolation of Salmonella. The report described the medium as useful for the differentiation of “paratyphoid B” from other intestinal gram-negative bacilli. Kaufmann modified their formula and used Brilliant Green Agar in addition to Tetrathionate Broth for the isolation of Salmonella from stool specimens. The outstanding selectivity of this medium permits use of moderately heavy inocula, which should be evenly distributed over the surface. Brilliant Green Agar is used in the microbial limits test. Harlequin Tryptone Bile Glucuronide Agar (TBX) is used for the enumeration of E. coli in food and animal feed and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Tryptone Bile Glucuronide Agar is recommended by ISO 16649-1:2001, ISO 16649-2:2001 and ISO 16649-3:2015 for enumeration of β-glucuronidase positive Escherichia coli in products intended for human consumption or for the feeding of animals. The medium contains tryptone as a source of nitrogen and amino acids, bile salts act as a selective against Gram-positive organisms and agar is the gelling agent. 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-glucuronide (X-glucuronide) is a chromogen for the detection of the β-D-glucuronidase enzyme which is present in most E. coli* but not other coliforms.*96-97% of E.coli are β-D-glucuronidase positive.
