Distillation Labware

Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Column, Water Jacketed, 24/40 Joint, 200mm. Jacketed distilling column has indentations on the inner tube to support packing material. The jacket allows the column to be used as a condenser. Column has a top outer and lower inner standard taper joint. Available in joint sizes other than those listed. All sizes have an I.D. of approximately 10mm.

Condenser, 45/50 Joint, Reflux, 315 x 100mm. Compact high efficiency reflux condenser employs a double wall thimble shape bulb sealed into the outer jacket. Serrated hose connections for water connection extend through the outer bulb and have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration. While the overall height of this condenser is only 210-215mm, it has the efficiency of a standard 400mm Liebig or West condenser.

Unique one-piece distilling condenser is actually a 75º adapter, highly efficient coil condenser and vacuum adapter in a compact one-piece unit. Available with a choice of three sizes of condensers with uptake inner joint as listed. Top thermometer joint is a 10/30 outer for use with a 3in immersion CG-3506 thermometer. Receiver joint on all sizes is a 24/40 inner having a sealed-in drip tip.

Distilling Receiver, 250mL, 24/40, Complete. Cow type design has three receivers 45º apart. Condensers with lower drip tip inner joints will protrude into the spherical section, permitting the distillate to fall directly into the receiving flasks. Distribution adapter has a serrated connection for attachment to vacuum source. Complete item supplied with distribution adapter, three flasks of the listed size and six stainless steel springs.

NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accept a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

Distilling Adapter, Double, 10° Angled Side Neck, 24/40 Joint, 6mm PTFE Stopcock, 1/2" Swagelok. Adapter is designed for use with flasks or reaction vessel lids that have a 10° angled side neck. Adapter has a lower inner joint and two top outer joints. Lower stopcock is a 6mm PTFE stopcock with a 1/2” or 3/4” OD distillate takeoff for use with a compression fitting and TFE tubing. PLEASE NOTE: ADAPTER CAN BE USED WITH COMPOUND ANGLED SIDE NECKS.

The 10/18 top outer joint is for a 1¿ immersion thermometer while the 10/30 joints are for a 2¿ immersion thermometer. The 24/40 joint size uses 4mm glass or PTFE stopcocks, and are positioned to permit changing of receiver without interruption of the distillation process. The 14/20 size uses 2mm bore glass or PTFE stopcocks.

Designed for use with small quantities where hold up between the flask and receiver must be kept to a minimum. The thermometer bulb and stem serve as column packing. Upper hose connections are for cooling lines while the lower connection is for vacuum. Available with Vigreux indentations to improve efficiency. NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accepts a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

Condenser, Reflux, 300mm, 24/40 Joint, 125mm Coil Length, GL-14 Screw Cap, Removable Hose Connections. Coil style reflux condenser with a large diameter jacket and coil, similar to CG-1213-L but with detachable hose connections. Connections are made of polypropylene and provide a safe and easy way of connecting and disconnecting flexible tubing to the condenser. Supplied complete with two GL open top screw caps and two bent polypropylene hose connections. Condensing area is the same as CG-1213-L.
